We are growing!

There are so many reasons why capoeira benefits a child growing up in Los Angeles.

Whether your child loves dance, martial arts, games, sports, or music, they can explore all these and more with capoeira.

Our classes will expose them to kids from all walks of life, so they learn to appreciate others.

Capoeira develops their coordination, flexibility, strength, and creativity while establishing the idea that a healthy lifestyle is fun for the rest of their lives.

Our instructors and community are a big part of your child's capoeira journey providing structure, respect, and fun.

We welcome you to join our capoeira family.  For no additional charge, you may bring your child to our adult classes, and to any of our various events that we have each month.   (exceptions: workshops and batizados.  these events are not free of charge)

With UCA Los Angeles, your family's village just got a little bigger.

UCAinLA Capoeira Kids Competition

This is a new and fun way for kids to grow in their capoeira experience.

We hold these competitions periodically during the year, and they are open to all UCAinLA Kids Capoeira students.

These are optional, and are not required for any student.  They are meant to be fun and motivating.

Safety

This is always a priority.  The goal of this competition is to be safe and fun.

This is accomplished through the nature of the scoring.

Cooperative capoeira games are rewarded.  Competitors that just kick their fellow competitors a whole lot will not be rewarded.  The goal is not to get the other competitor, but rather to play your best capoeira with your fellow competitors in each game to make the best possible capoeira game happen each and every time.

Equipment Requirements

All competitors must wear their UCA capoeira uniform to participate in the competitions.

The UCA capoeira uniform includes:

  1. UCA shirt
  2. UCA pants
  3. cordão (if the competitor has one)

How do you win?

This is the first question on anyone's mind, so here's how it works:

1. All competitors will play at least 5 capoeira games each game with a different partner (if there are enough competitors to have a different partner each time.)

2. In each game, both competitors' game will be scored based on Four Criteria:

  1. Music
  2. Game
  3. Kicks
  4. Movement

3. For each game, the total score awarded to each competitor will be the sum of their scores for the Four Criteria.

4. For each game, both competitors will receive the same score for that game.  The game itself is scored.

5. After each player has played at least 5 different capoeira games, all competitors scores will be tallied.

6. There are 5 ways to win:

  1. Overall - the competitor with the highest total Overall score
  2. Music - the competitor with the highest total score for Musicality
  3. Game - the competitor with the highest total score for The Game
  4. Kicks - the competitor with the highest total score for the Quality of Kicks
  5. Movement - the competitor with the highest total score for Movement Vocabulary

7. In the event of a tie, only the competitors with tie scores will play each other for a total of at least two games depending on the number of competitors involved in the tie.

Scoring

1. Scoring will be judged by adult capoeira students with at least cordão amaerlo or higher.

2. Scoring will be on a 1 to 5 scale, with 1 being the least effective and 5 being the most effective.

3. Each of the Four Criteria will be scored by a single judge for that individual game

  • there will be a judge for Music, Game, Kicks, and Movement, respectively
  • each judge will give a score of 1 to 5 for each game in their respective category

4. Description of the Four Criteria:

  1. Music - do the competitors listen to the music and bring that into their capoeira game
  2. Game - do the competitors play well together, and interact to make the capoeira game happen
  3. Kicks - do the competitors display good form, accurate kicks, and safe control of their kicks
  4. Movement - do the competitors include a variety of well executed movements and creativity in the game

5. Each game can receive a maximum score of 20 and a minimum score of 4 based on the scoring of the judges

Competitors Strategy for Success

1. Play your best capoeira based on your time and knowledge

2. Play capoeira according to the rhythm of the berimbau

3. Listen to the music

4. Come to classes as often as possible to sharpen your skills and grow your knowledge

5. Have fun!!!
