Literally translated to English, Contramestre means "foreman."

We know that in capoeira it means something similar, but different.
It actually is a good analogy, the foreman is the architects man on the construction scene. The boss on site when the head honcho is not present. The contramestre has enough experience to be able to handle most situaitons that can arise without having to turn to the architect for good solutions.
This is fair to say about a capoeira contramestre as well.
It takes a good amount of time on the capoeira journey to reach contramestre.
It is quite often the step below mestre which we have talked about before.
