When translated literally to English, Chapa means "plate, slab, or sheet." 

As you can see it is not exactly that when we think of it in the capoeira context.  Bruce Lee said, and I am paraphrasing, that the side kick (like chapa) is one of the most powerful kicks. 

There are multiple kinds of chapa...  chapa de frente (pisão), chapa giratoria, chapa do chão.

All in all it is a powerful and useful part of your capoeira vocabulary.
